Modern Warfare III retains its predecessors' realistic, modern setting and continues the sub-series storyline. It is about the story of the special operations commando Task Force 141, who wants to catch Vladimir Makarov, a Russian ultranationalist and terrorist who plans to start a third world war. Modern Warfare III's multiplayer includes sixteen remastered maps from 2009's Modern Warfare 2, with at least twelve new maps planned for inclusion post-launch. A Zombies mode, co-created by Black Ops sub-series developer Treyarch and built around an open-world player versus environment experience, is also included.

Team Deathmatch and Free-For-All arrive in Modern Warfare III. Fans can enjoy classic objective-based modes such as Search and Destroy, Dominate, Hardpoint, Control, and Headquarters. All of the above modes offer a vast multiplayer experience, but Modern Warfare III's offerings continue and it goes on. Two expansive game modes are reintroduced to the game: Ground War and Invasion. Similarly, the Gun Game remains a part of Modern Warfare III, giving players a break from the high-stakes, competitive modes.
